Reporting domestic abuse — your rights and steps

6 min read · Educational content only

Immediate safety first

Call 112 (national emergency) or 181 (women's helpline). Ask for a Domestic Incident Report (DIR) — this is the legal starting document under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.

Who can help write the DIR

Any Protection Officer (appointed in every district), a registered Service Provider, or directly the magistrate. You do NOT need a lawyer to start. NGOs like Majlis (Mumbai) and Lawyers Collective (Delhi) provide free assistance.

What the court can order

Protection order (no contact), residence order (you can't be thrown out of the shared household), monetary relief (maintenance), custody of children, and compensation. Orders are usually granted within 60 days.
